I’m sure I’ve probably said this before, but I miss Trader Joes. They really need to put a TJ’s up here in Alaska… or two… or three. One of our favorite products was their grapefruit soda, because in addition to having a crush on Trader Joes, I also have a crush on carbonated beverages and grapefruit. The soda is made with real grapefruit juice and comes in tall pretty glass bottles (I’m assuming they still carry it). It’s cheery and refreshing.
This homemade version is so simple. Its pure sparkling grapefruit flavor is irresistible. I may have a teensy-weensy homemade-fruit-juice-soda-habit forming because of it. All you need is a grapefruit, sugar, water, and club soda or seltzer water. Let’s get started.
Grapefruit Soda
Yields: 2 servings
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed (I used one Ruby Red grapefruit)
- 1 cup club soda/seltzer water
To a small saucepan over medium heat, add the sugar and water. Bring to a simmer and stir until sugar completely dissolves (on my stove this only takes about 60 seconds). Remove from heat and set aside to cool. This is your simple syrup.
Combine together the grapefruit juice and 1/4 cup of the simple syrup. Stir to combine. Add 1 cup of club soda. Fill two glasses with ice and pour the soda mixture over the ice. Serve.
